Where else on earth can you stand upon active volcanoes, massive craters, see boiling mud pools, exploding geysers, native forests, a buried Maori village, and a sacred green lake? Rotorua was once home to the “eighth wonder of the world” - the famous Pink and White Terraces which were tragically destroyed in the 1886 volcanic eruption of Mount Tarawera.
From Pohutu Lodge, the Te Puia Cultural Centre is just 200m south; the Rotorua Golf Club is a short walk across the road; the mighty Redwood Forest is 5 minutes drive to the East; and the city centre is only 2km north.
Directions
Step-by-step Instructions to Pohutu Lodge:
From Hamilton/Auckland
1. You will come into Rotorua from the North on State Highway
5 (SH5).
2. Simply continue straight ahead (through several sets of lights
and roundabouts) through the suburbs to the Southern outskirts of town (6km) along SH5.
3. This road ends at a T-junction at a give-way sign. Here, the
Rotorua Golf Course is on your left and the Waiariki Polytechnic
Institute is on your right.
4. A right hand turn here will take you to Taupo, you must make
a left hand turn here onto Hemo Road.
5. Simply take the first right on Hemo Road, just past the Te Puia Cultural Centre, which is Meade St (if you pass the BP service station
on your right you have gone too far).
6. Pohutu Lodge is the second building
on your right in Meade St.
From Taupo
1. You will come into Rotorua from the South on SH 5/SH 30.
2. You will see a major turn off on the left which goes to Hamilton,
do not take this road, continue along SH30 which banks gradually
to the right.
3. You will see the Rotorua Golf Course on your left and then
the Te Puia Cultural Centre on your right. You are now on
Hemo Road.
4. Simply take the first right, just past the Te Puia,
which is Meade St (if you pass the BP service station on your
right you have gone too far).
5. Pohutu Lodge is the second building
on your right in Meade St.
From Tauranga
1. You will come into Rotorua from the North on SH 30 called Te Ngae Rd.
2. Continue straight ahead until you come to the second set of traffic lights (the first being only a pedestrian crossing).
3. Turn left at these traffic lights into Sala St.
4. Sala St ends at a T-junction in the form of a large roundabout, turn left here.
